Why is this an issue in Yarra Ranges?

  • In 2023, 36.9% of adults in Yarra Ranges completed at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical exercise in the past week (compared to 35.1% across Victoria).
  • In 2023, 17.8% of adults did not do any moderate to vigorous physical activity in the past week, compared to 16.8% across Victoria.
  • In 2024, 89% of residents said they would be more active if there was something interesting, appealing, accessible and convenient for them.

What can Council do?

  • Ensure both our built and natural environments are healthy, safe, inclusive and accessible.
  • Integrating healthy design principles into land-use planning by creating infrastructure and ensuring amenities are available in our parks and open spaces.
  • Regreen urban areas and increase access to safe open spaces.
  • Provide adequate lighting in public spaces, to improve a sense of safety.
  • Build and maintain paths, trails and play spaces.

What's already happening?

  • Council's Integrated Transport Strategy and Active Recreation Plan highlight opportunities for physical activity.
  • Ridges and Rivers consists of three outdoor attractions to promote active living, including ngurrak barring, Warburton Moutain Bike Trail and Yarra Valley Trail.
  • Art and Sole is a VicHealth funded joint project between Yarra Ranges Council, Inspiro and key community stakeholders, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Aboriginal Corporation and the Lilydale Historical Society.
