Why is this an issue in Yarra Ranges?

In Yarra Ranges in 2022/23:

  • 1,944 family violence incidents were reported.
  • 855 clients who sought homelessness services due to family violence.
  • Family violence incidents accounted for 34% of criminal offences.
  • 75% of family violence victims were female.
  • 74% of offenders and other parties involved were male.
  • 7% of incidents involved elder abuse, mostly with an adult perpetrator.
  • 136 emergency department patients treated for family violence related injuries.
  • A child was present as a victim or witness in 41% of incidents.

What can Council do?

  • Have specific plans and actions for preventing family violence or improving gender equity in the next Health & Wellbeing Strategy.
  • Continue to be an active member of the Together for Equality and Respect partnership.
  • Use data, research and local knowledge to highlight the complexity of violence against women, to guide primary prevention efforts.
  • Apply a gender lens to all programs, policy and plans produced by Council by completing Gender Impact Assessments, as required.
  • Strengthen council’s influence through public health advocacy.

What's already happening?

  • Partnership with Women's Health East on multiple projects including Together for Equality and Respect and Margins to Mainstream (M2M).
  • Child Safe Standards training offered to community organisations to improve practice.
  • Men as Caregivers Poster Series: a set of posters featuring men in caregiving roles, created by a group of local fathers and carers working together.
  • Creating a Place for Women in Sport: a tool to help clubs identify how they can promote gender equality.
  • 16 Days of Activism Grants: Council grants of up to $1500 for community projects.
  • Capital works projects include a checklist of questions on gender and other factors like race, gender, disability and age are considered in planning and design.
