Asset Plan 2022-2032 & Asset Management Policy

Thank you for your input into this project. The Plan and Policy have now been endorsed and can be viewed below.

What are Council assets?

Each year it costs Council around $196 million to run its services and provide for the many needs of our community. As a mix of rural and urban areas, Yarra Ranges has around 160,000 residents, over 14,000 small businesses and around 7 million visitors each year. Those who live work and play in Yarra Ranges use not only our roads, footpaths and drains but also our beautiful parks, trails, playgrounds and open spaces. A large part of our annual costs involves managing our assets. So what are assets?

Assets are all of the things that make it possible for Council to deliver services to the community, and help residents to stay connected, healthy and active. In fact, many of the things you see as you step outside your home are assets that Council manages: the footpath you walk along to exercise; many of the roads you drive on to get from A to B; the street lights that keep you safe; the buildings where you or family members take part in community group or sporting activities; and the playgrounds, parks and open spaces that keep you healthy and active.

Yarra Ranges Council manages around $1.5 billion worth of assets including:

- 1,764 km of roads, including 728 km of unsealed roads

- 654 km of footpaths

- More than 500 buildings, including community centres, sporting pavilions and public toilets

- 8 swimming pool facilities and 3 splash parks

- 196 kms of trails

- 201 reserves and parks

- 177 play spaces

- 305 bridges

- 44 trucks and tractors

- 826 kms of drainage pipes

The Draft Asset Plan and Policy

Over the last six months, Council has worked with the community to develop our first Asset Plan, as required by the Local Government Act 2020. The Draft Asset Plan outlines the way we will manage our assets now and into the future. It complements our Asset Management Policy that defines the guiding principles, practices and responsibilities which Council consistently applies in managing the approximately $1.5 billion of infrastructure and property assets.

These key documents support asset-related decisions that align with community expectations and service needs in a sustainable manner and act to moderate the risk of poorly managed assets.

We are keen for further community feedback before the final plan is presented to Council in June, so please take the time to read the Draft Plan and Policy and provide your comments below. If you would like to provide more in-depth feedback, please send an email to assetplan@yarraranges.vic.gov.au

The feedback provided will be considered as the final version of the plan is prepared. All feedback is valuable and if it is not directly reflected in the Plan, it will be documented by the team to bear in mind when future decisions are being made. This Plan will be reviewed again, together with the Council Plan and Financial Plan in four years.
