Tawny Frogmouth and Pathmarker Birds

Renate Crow's Tawny Frogmouth and Peter Mcilwain's Pathmarker Birds

Community members and visitors can enjoy temporary artworks between Sassafras and Olinda as part of the RidgeWalk trail.

Earlier this year, Council commissioned Peter Mcilwain and Renate Crow to create temporary public artworks along this first section of the path, which has been newly landscaped.

Renate’s Tawny Frogmouth, found along the forest trail, is a steel-framed sculpture with its outer feathering comprising of woven locally sourced natural fibres. Walkers of RidgeWalk will be able to carefully sit inside the Tawny Frogmouth’s ‘belly’: a tiny sanctuary to take a moment to be still. Don’t miss out on your last week to experience the Tawny Frogmouth as it will be deinstalled on Monday the 10th October.

Peter’s Pathmarker Birds are a series of geometric abstracted birds that will accompany your walk all the way up the trail. The works function as way-finders or markers along the path. The markers, like the local birds, offer small bursts of colour dotted along the track, contrasting the cathedral-like space formed by tall trees, and intervening the long sightlines of the steep slope. The Pathmarker Birds will remain along the RidgeWalk trail awhile longer.

Please note that when visiting Sassafras Art Walk, parking is limited. Please park in Sassafras village or the carpark adjacent to Sassafras Preschool and walk to the beginning of the track at the end of Mason Grove.

It is a short, but steep, walk up the track to see the artworks and walking shoes are recommended.
