Final Public Artwork Installed on ngurrak barring | RidgeWalk
17 November 2025
The final permanent artwork along the trails of ngurrak barring | RidgeWalk has been installed.
The fifth in the series of Storm Leaves sculptures has been erected in Kalorama Memorial Park. Storm Leaves is a series of large-scale leaf sculptures by Australian artist, Anton McMurray.
ngurrak barring celebrates the artists, designers, activists and creatives that have been inspired by this beautiful region. These new public artworks showcawse the talent of current and emerging artists and storytellers who continue to make world-class works in response to the unique environment of the Dandenong Ranges.
ngurrak barring, which means mountain paths in Woiwurrung, is an arts and culture trail through the Dandenong Ranges. Sculptures, gathering spaces, digital artworks, and signage highlighting stories of the area can be found along the interconnected walking trails.
In addition to the Storm Leaves artwork in Kalorama, the other four Storm Leaves mark significant points along the trails, located at Grants Picnic Ground, Kallista, Birdsland Reserve in Belgrave Heights, at the intersection of Belview Terrace and School Track in Tremont, and in Montrose town centre.
In total, nine permanent artworks can be discovered along the trails of ngurrak barring.
- Thrivance; Then, Now, Next, (Hillclimb Track, Sherbrooke Forest)
A collaborative work by Tiriki Onus, Jenna Lee, and Jamie Ferguson, this powerful, site-responsive installation weaves together four generations of family history, activism, and creative expression that have taken place in the Dandenong Ranges.
- Djirra Binak, (intersection of Ridge Road and Falls Road, Mt Dandenong)
Djirra Binak (Reed Basket) is a dynamic sculptural installation by Murrup Biik—a public art practice led by Aunty Kim Wandin and Chris Joy—in collaboration with Collide Public Art Initiative. The artwork is surrounded by plants used in traditional Wurundjeri basket making practices, creating a space where future weaving projects may take place.
- The Reveal (Channel 10 Track, Doongalla Forest)
This highly evocative installation is made of glass mosaics, etchings and inlaid boulders, the work of Helen Bodycomb (artist), Cate Kennedy (writer) and Aunty Lee-Anne Clarke (cultural advisor and artist).
- Regeneration - The Listening Place. (Kalorama Park, Kalorama)
For this work, artist Jon Tarry worked collaboratively with James Morton of TARRMACstudio and landscape architect Marti Fooks to create an experience that comprises sculpture embedded in its environment, as well as native plantings and pathways, designed to complement one another and be experienced as a whole. This will soon be accessible to the public.
The final artwork installation marks a significant milestone for this project. To date 14kms of upgraded trails have been delivered, along with safer pedestrian crossings and an extensive suite of wayfinding signage and storytelling, bringing the rich stories of this area to life.
ngurrak barring | RidgeWalk is jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments and Yarra Ranges Council.
