Purpose

Local government's purpose is to represent and serve their communities – and these communities include young people!

Our Youth Advisory Group provides a way for young people to make meaningful change within Yarra Ranges. This can include opportunities to consult on policy issues, identifying and advising Council on issues impacting young people, and create relevant resources.

Aims

  • Be part of important discussions and decisions in Council
  • Help create a youth-led project
  • Provide opportunities for leadership training to all members

What does the group do?

We will meet twice a month for two hours. These will include a mix of online and in-person meetings (with snacks included!).

Meetings will include time to work on projects, provide advice or feedback on Council plans and strategies, meeting with people from across the Council. There will be opportunities to receive training and professional development, as well as connect with organisations across the Yarra Ranges.

Who are we looking for?

This program is open to anyone aged 15 to 25 years, who either lives, works, or has a significant connection to the Yarra Ranges. This is an inclusive and diverse group – a place to learn how to be an advocate, make an impact, and build leadership skills. No experience necessary.

What has the group already achieved?

You can read up about the 2021 Youth Advisory Group. Some highlights include:

  • Provided consultations to many people at Yarra Ranges Council which has allowed us to get to know the work Council does, while also sharing feedback on their current projects, ensuring youth voice is embedded in their approach
    • Teams include: Bushlands, Biodiversity and Conservation Team, Strategic Planning and Infrastructure, Communications, Youth, and Lilydale Art Murals
  • Meetings with senior decision-makers
    • Met with Mayor, CEO, and other Executive Leadership across Council.
