An update on parklets, community spaces or temporary outdoor dining sites

Our communities and towns are working hard to rebuild after the impacts of COVID-19 and the devastating storms, and local businesses have played a vital role.

Over the last few years, to encourage people to spend more time in townships while maintaining safe social distancing, Council with the support of the Victorian Government, created a range of shared community spaces, parklets, and temporary dining spaces in towns across Yarra Ranges. The parklets and community spaces were designed to be relocatable and moved to new sites from time to time based on feedback and usage. The additional outdoor dining spaces were always intended to be temporary.

  • Council made the decision to close all temporary outdoor dining sites from 30th June 2022.
  • Pre-COVID footpath dining arrangements have been reinstated. Businesses can also apply for new footpath dining permits where space is available.
  • Community spaces and parklets will remain in the immediate future, where there is demonstrated usage and support.
  • If identified community spaces and parklets are underutilised or not supported by the community, they may be moved to new sites.

We want to know how are you using these spaces; if they should be kept in their curent locations; or any other suggestions for relocating under utlised parklets.
