Shaping Yarra Ranges
Following our consultations we are reassessing the initial design to address concerns around local congestion. We agree that this is an important aspect, so we are looking for how we can keep all of the great features of the initial design, while streamlining traffic.
The proposed raised pedestrian crossings would be in the heart of Sassafras on Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and Mountain Highway.
We have worked closely with schools, businesses and other key stakeholders in Sassafras to understand their needs and aspirations. This feedback, along with community consultation has given suggestions on how we can further improve the initial design.
The significance of the project for the local community, and expansion of scope in response to your feedback has moved the crossing out of the remit of the ngurrak barring project. While crossing plans are currently paused, the Sassafras Village Streetscape Plan will be developed to best support Sassafras township into the future.
All community input already shared will be considered in any future plans. There will also be future opportunities to have your say when plans continue.
Managing traffic flow through the main intersection.
Many contributors felt there needed to be a better balance between vehicles and pedestrians rather than providing full priority to one or the other. There were several suggestions to consider traffic lights or install a roundabout and we are currently revisiting these options.
Many contributors expressed the need for an additional crossing near Prince Street. A few also wanted an additional crossing for the Primary School.
While there was strong support for a speed limit reduction of some sort (61%), many people felt the change is only needed during business hours rather than a blanket 24/7 reduction.
