Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this project!

Thank you to everyone who contributed feedback to inform the final design of this new playspace.

This project was identified as one of the actions of the Kilsyth Recreation Reserve Master Plan

We anticipate construction on the playspace to commence by early 2026 and be completed by June 2026

You can follow the construction phase of this playspace here.

This playspace will feature a combination play unit, carousel, climbing net, standard and basket swings.

Phase 2 Consultation

We received 31 contributions during this second phase of consultation.

In response to feedback received, the location of the playspace has been swapped with the area allocated to multi court space, shown in images above, to create a buffer between activities on the oval and the playspace.

An additional birds-nest swing has been included to enhance inclusiveness of equipment.

Some comments received around elements including structured shelter and BBQ facilities will be included as part of the broader Kilsyth Recreation Reserve Master Plan, rather than this playspace stage.

Feedback around provision for dog recreation will be addressed in Councils People and Dogs in Parks project

As a local level playspace, fencing, water play and lighting will not be delivered in this project.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the concept designs!

This feedback will now inform the development of the detailed design-follow this page to stay updated on this project

Phase 1 Consultation

As part of delivering the Kilsyth Recreation Reserve Master Plan, incorporating feedback previously received, we have developed a draft concept design for a new playspace at Kilsyth Recreation Reserve.

Things you told us are important to you in the first phase of consultation, which have been considered for the draft design are;

  • Availability of seating.
    • We have included new seating and a picnic set.
  • Swings.
    • One set including a regular seat and a high back toddler seat has been included.
  • Shade.
    • The location is close to existing canopy trees. Some new plantings have been included to provide future shade.
  • Accessibility of equipment and pathways.
    • A sealed path will run through the space, with rubber patches to provide to access some equipment.
  • Equipment for a range of age groups.
    • In response we have equipment for younger children as well as a rope climbing structure to encourage more advanced play.

There were some things we heard that have not been incorporated into this playspace design. For example, natural elements, structured shelter and BBQ facilities will be included as part of the broader master plan.

Fencing will not be installed after consideration of the location. As a local level playspace, water play will not be delivered in this project.

This reserve is situated at corner of Kemp and Newton Avenues, Mt Evelyn View Map

Our first phase of feedback collection was to understand how you currently use the space and how you would like to see the space developed to create a valued place for the community.

The existing playspace was identified in the Playspace Plan 2019-2029 for renewal at the local level, which does not include any large infrastructure such as shelters, toilets and barbeques.

There is a new District-level playspace recently constructed 600m away, Morrison Reserve Playspace which includes toilets, drinking fountains, picnic spaces and great new equipment featuring a flying fox!

Using the feedback collected in phase 1, Council have worked with a team of consultants to develop a draft concept design which in now being advertised to the community during this second consultation phase for further feedback.

As part of this project, we will continue seeking feedback from local stakeholders including;

  • Mt Evelyn Township Group,
  • Mt Evelyn History Group
  • Mt Evelyn Community House

Council uses the word playspace, instead of playground because it covers more than the equipment. It reflects the wide range of users, age groups and experiences of the community in the space.

This survey is looking for your feedback on how to improve this playspace for the future. If you need to report damaged or missing playspace equipment or any other playspace issues/concerns about other playspaces in Yarra Ranges, please Report an issue with a playspace Yarra Ranges Council.

The existing playspace will be renewed in line with the recommendations within the Playspace Plan 2019-2029. As this is a local-level playspace, large infrastructure such as water play, public toilets, shelters and BBQ's along with formal skate and bike activity spaces cannot be accommodated in the scope of these works.

Nature play is an emerging trend in playspace design recognising the physical, social, cognitive and creative benefits of people’s contact with nature. These playspaces include natural elements (e.g. rocks, logs and plants) and provide materials that have no ‘fixed purpose’ (e.g. branches). Children in these spaces adapt them to suit their scenarios and games rather than being limited by the design. Natural areas in an outdoor playspace can include: • a range of plants to encourage play and touch through climbing, seed pods, branches and bark • elements for cubby house construction • small pits of pebbles, gravel, and smooth river rocks • natural environments that encourage birds, butterflies and other insects • logs and rocks for climbing and balance.
