Why is this a focus area?

The 2015 Strategy Evaluation showed how important it is for people of all ages to help care for the environment.

Looking after the environment works best when everyone shares the responsibility: Council, community groups, schools, families and local businesses. Working together helps protect nature, build climate resilience and prepare for extreme weather.

When people have the knowledge, skills and confidence to take action, it helps support a healthy environment for future generations.

What has the community said so far?

Residents want simple, clear information about how to care for the environment. This includes help with habitat gardening and weeds, sustainable living, tree clearing rules, responsible pet management and understanding local environmental values.

People also value chances to learn, volunteer, connect with others and take part in local environmental activities.

What has Council been doing in this space?

In 2024–25, Council supported community leadership, learning and hands-on environmental action, including:

  • Supporting over 60 environmental volunteer groups and nine community gardens across the region.
  • Running the Gardens for Harvest program, with strong attendance at workshops and events.
  • Supporting 120 schools through ResourceSmart Schools, completing 30 modules and winning 7 awards.
  • Hosting the biggest Learning for Sustainability Conference yet, with 250 attendees.
  • Upgrading five play spaces using sustainable materials, shade trees and nature-based play features.
  • Completing 956 hectares of weed control through the PeriUrban Weed Program.
  • Working with the Sustainable Environment Advisory Committee (SEAC) to gather community-based environmental advice.
  • Supporting land managers through Landcare, Gardens for Wildlife and Ribbons of Green participation.
