Following recent community engagement, new signage has now been installed in Warburton.

The engagement took place after feedback from community members and local businesses that the parking situation in Warburton was worsening, particularly on weekends and public holidays.

As a result of the feedback, the below changes have been made to meet current needs, enhance traffic flow and free up parking spaces within the town for residents and visitors:

Thomas Avenue

  • Previously unrestricted parking
  • Will now be 4-hour parking Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, and 2-hour parking on weekends and public holidays, 9am-5pm

Warburton Arts Centre

  • Previously unrestricted parking
  • Will now be 3-hour parking 9am-5pm
  • Two new accessible parking spaces added

  • Two extra 30-minute parking spaces have been included bringing a total of five short term spaces (one near the post office, two near Woody's Charcoal Chicken and two near Warburton Bakery) All 30-minute restrictions will apply from 9am-5pm every day of the week
  • Removal of one-hour restriction along Northern side of highway

Council will also undertake a pilot parking improvement program later this year to further alleviate the ongoing challenges of parking in the area, which you can read more on here.

What we heard

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on proposed parking restrictions in Warburton, we know that parking in the area can often be a significant issue for residents, businesses and visitors and that current restrictions are inconsistent with the greatest number of visitors and when parking demand is the greatest.

The valuable feedback received has informed changes to the proposed restrictions including;

  • Changing the proposed restriction to 3 hours near the Arts Centre
  • Modifying restrictions to two hours on weekends and public holidays and longer 4-hour parking during the week along Warburton Highway and Thomas Avenue.
  • Removing 1 hour restriction along the northern side of Warburton Highway
  • 2 additional 30 minute parking spaces have been included bringing a total of 5 short term spaces along Warburton Highway - 1 near the post office, 2 near Woody's Charcoal Chicken and 2 near Warburton Bakery

These changes aim to meet current needs, enhance traffic flow and increase access to local businesses, along with freeing up parking spaces within the town for residents and visitors alike.

A common response from the community was for residents and businesses to be given permits to allow them to park all day in Warburton, however this is not possible as it would result in even less available parking spaces being available during the day and the needs of our local businesses that rely on parking turnover. Most business already have space within their properties which could be used for parking.

Signage is expected to be installed in May/June 2024 and new parking restrictions commence. Follow up surveys will be undertaken later in 2024/early 2025 to evaluate use of parking spaces and implemented changes.

Parking enforcement will continue in all areas across Yarra Ranges to target people who overstay the designated parking restrictions.
