Yarra Ranges Council and Women's Health East want to understand local women's past experiences and perceptions of safety in the space, and their hopes and requirements for the future of the space.

A gender equity walk is a method of community engagement, designed to elevate and utilise the lived experience of local women to inform a design that meets the needs of all residents.
During the walk, we will consider various sites within the reserve to hear local women's views and feedback on how the space could be improved, and the types of factors which contribute to or detract from the safety and inclusivity of the space.
Participants must be over 16 years of age (younger children may attend in the company of a parent/guardian).
We encourage women with disabilities and women from a diverse range of backgrounds to take part in this walk - please let us know how we may best support your participation by contacting Deborah Wu (WHE Gender Equality Advisor) at dwu@whe.org.au.
This may include (but is not limited to) arranging transport, providing an Auslan or language interpreter, or supporting the cost of attendance of an aide or carer.
An important part of the gender equity walk is to understand women’s experiences of any access barriers at the reserve. We encourage you to get in touch to discuss your access requirements to participate in this process.
'Women’ is used here to refer to all people who identify as women. We acknowledge that gender identity is not a binary concept. Womes Health East and Council value the contribution of trans, non-binary and gender diverse people and encourages their participation in this activity.
This event forms part of wider community consultations on improvements to the Belgrave South Recreation Reserve. The feedback of this walk will help infom the detailed designs for the space.

Belgrave South is a local recreation reserve managed by Council for the benefit of local sporting clubs and residents in Belgrave South and surrounding areas. The site is utilised for walking, running, passive recreation and well as users of the play space. More formally the site has ongoing tenancy by the South Belgrave Football/Netball teams, South Belgrave Cricket Club as well as Selby & Belgrave Netball clubs who utilise the site for training.
We are interested in the community’s thoughts on ways to target:
- Improved use of the facilities
- Perceptions of safety / feeling safe within the reserve
- Deterring antisocial behaviour
